Try to come to the sport clubs banquet tomorrow!  Free pizza! (see below)

Subject: SCF Reminders
Date: Wed, 29 Apr 2009 09:02:08 -0700
From: dmp54@wsu.edu
CC: carly_morse@wsu.edu; nprante@wsu.edu

Club Officers,

Reminder that the year-end Sport Club Federation banquet is tomorrow night at 6:00pm on SRC Court 7. If anyone is interested in standing for office for next year's SCF Council we are still looking for nominations. This is a great opportunity to be more heavily involved in the SCF decision making process and also would look good on a resume. If you or anyone on your club is interested please send Carly, Nick, or I an email with your nomination by Noon on April 30.

Additionally we will be serving pizza at the banquet and each club needs to turn in their semester end report (attached) by tomorrow night. Please let me know if you have any questions and hope to see you tomorrow night.

Meeting Recap and Practice this Week!

Hey Sailors,

Just to recap.  We decided that practice till be on Wed/Thurs from 3:15-7pm.  Meet at the sailing shop (map on website sailing.wsu.edu) and carpool down down to the river.  Also, we need fundraising ideas and put your order in for a sweatshirt if you want one.  RSVP for the practice(s) you will be able to attend.  Wetsuits will be required if you want to get on the water for practice.

Also, we are going to Victoria for the Western Canada Cup regatta this weekend, the first weekend of spring brake.  We will leave Pullman on Friday afternoon and the regatta will be over Sunday afternoon in Victoria.  We will not be renting a van for this regatta because the too many people will want to stay in Seattle after the regatta.  If you wish to attend this regatta please reply with your name and which your destination for spring brake (i.e. Seattle or Pullman).

Let me know if you have any questions.

See you on the snake!

Hey Sailors,

Just got an email from western saying that everyone is required to bring their own wetsuit for Jeff Mixdorf.  In the past we were able to borrow suits from Western but this year we're going to have to bring our own.  If you do not have a wet suit I'd reccomend going to the ORC and renting one for the weekend.

Addresses

Hi Sailors,

Its time to send out our newsletter and donation requests.  Please email me the address and full name of anyone you think might want to make a donation (i.e. parents, alum,
rich relatives, yacht clubs...).  If you gave me an address at one of the meetings please re-send it in an email.  Currently we do not have enough money to compete in another regatta...so this is important.

Thanks for your help and call me with any questions.

Rainbow Cup

Hey Sailors!

Rainbow cup is the annual intersectional sailed at the University of Hawaii!  This year its going to be on the weekend of Jan 17-18.  Imagine hiking out in 20 knots over crystal clear water with air and water temperatures of 85 degrees. Its basically the best regatta ever!  We need to decide who is going to this regatta because plane tickets cost more the longer you wait. The team cannot afford to pay for everyone's travel on this one because we don't have that kind of money.  Instead, everyone will purchase their own ticket.  We need people do decide and commit to purchasing a ticket before December 1.  I just checked and its about $500 from Spokane and about $350 from Seattle.

Let me know if you want to go and feel free to ask me any questions.

Meeting Recap and Outlaw

Hey All,

Here is a quick recap of last week's meeting:

We will be holding practices on Wednesday for the remainder of the season.  After FroshSoph we will focus on restoring our boats.  This winter we will focus on fundraising and building the team.

Fundraising is crucial for us this winter.  We need to raise money to cover recent equipment purchases and the high level of travel we have undertaken this year.  I will be sending letters to your parents asking for donations.  Please send me the address of anyone who might be interested in contributing to the team (remember all donation are tax deductible).  Also, if you have any fundraising ideas please let me know.

Outlaw is this weekend in Oregon!  We need one more person.  Let me know ASAP if you want to go.

So far only the following people are going:

Scott
James
Nathan
Kevin
Sean
Bjorn
Annie - ?

Have a great Halloween,

Coed Champs / St. Francis

If you are planning on going to the race this weekend in Seattle let me know by tomorrow.  Also let me know when you can leave.

The following weekend we are going to San Francisco, so let me know for sure if you can go to that also.  We would be leaving Thursday night, coming back monday.  Does anyone know of a place we can stay in SF?  If not we will be getting a hotel room.

So, email me or call me with:

Coed Champs this weekend in seattle - YES or NO
When you can leave.
St. Francis in SF - YES or NO
When you can leave.

By the way, St. Francis is probably the coolest race you can go to.  We sail right in front of fishermans wharf between the golden gate bridge and alcatraz.  Plus its a fun drive down.

We have sweatshirts available!

We have more sweatshirts available, if you didn't get a chance to pre-order.
Several Mediums, some Large, some Small. They're going quick but if you'd like one, call or e-mail me right away.

They're $25.  Profits go towards maintaining our boats and equipment and towards some regattas with things like camping/lodging fees. So basically, you get a cool new sweatshirt and in the long run you're benefitting from the money also!

Thanks,
Angela Congdon

Sailing Practice

First off, I put some videos on the website of good roll tacking examples.
http://sailing.wsu.edu/sailing_racing_videos.aspx

Next, we will start having a tuesday practice also.  Tuesday 3:15 to 6:30.

Also just some rules for practice a equipment.

Be sure to keep everything clean and organized in the shop.  We dont want to give them any reason to stop letting us store stuff there.  Put the rudders and tillers in the locker, the blue box in a big locker and the sails on top.  If anything is wet make sure you dry it out.  Dont put sails or sheets away wet.  Lay them out, but not it the way of anything.  Also make sure you put sails in the correct bags.

Practice

Here is the practice schedule for the rest of the semester based on input i recieved at the last meeting.

Monday 3:15-6:30

Thursday 3:15-6:30

I want everyone to go to both practices if possible, but you must go to at least one practice a week.  Who can drive on Thursdays?  We need at least a couple people to drive.

Don't forget we have disrict champs in two weeks at Seattle, so we need to practice hard.  Check out NWICSA for the NOR.

See you at practice on Monday.

cameron
angela
butterfly
flower
dcubed
ramo
ruel ??
bjorn
phil
ryan l.

Only 6 people can sail in a team race, so if everyone comes many people will not be sailing.  But you are still welcome to come and watch. We will be camping, so it should be very fun.  I heard BAQwinded will be performing, so that should be good.  Give me a shout if you want to be on this list, or not.

shoveling snow this weekend!

We are holding a fundraiser this weekend of shoveling snow for residents and businesses around town.
It is important to help out because this money is for you. It will be used at regattas this spring, for keeping our equipment in nice condition, and towards a new boat.

It will be Sat 2/9 and Sun 2/10 from 9am to 12pm.
It is mandatory to help out for both days.
I know there is a huge basketball game at noon tomorrow, so have your friends save you seats. I don't want to do this by myself.

Meet at Dissmores 9am sharp tomorrow, and Sun.
Bring your own shovel, or borrow from a friend.
Dress warmly, you can always peel of layers and leave them in the car.

Please call if you need a ride to Dissmores.

See you tomorrow,

Sorry guys, for some reason I was a week off. If you'd like a sweatshirt, please e-mail me by Mon, Feb 11th.

They look like this. http://sailing.wsu.edu/sailing_info_merchandise.aspx
The predicted amount is $25-30 (most likely $25) so I am taking a PREORDER. This doesn't mean you have to pay now. I want to get an idea of how many sweatshirts to order without having too many leftovers. If you're on the edge, e-mail me anyway and say that you're a maybe. acongdon@wsu.edu

overview of meeting

Here are some important things that we covered in last night's meeting if you didn't make it. Although, be sure to come next time!

First, we will be recruiting at a table in front of the rec center 3-6pm TODAY! Please stop by and say hi or even stick around for a bit to share your knowledge about sailing!

There is a clinic this weekend at UW. We have a lot of people going, which is great! It's not too late. E-mail Scott today if you want to go scottjwilson@gmail.com.

Also, there is team racing next weekend, Feb 23rd-24th on Orcas Island. It's going to be a blast. So if you want to go or have questions about team racing itself, e-mail Scott right away.

If you'd like to go to the regatta in Victoria, Canada on April 10th-11th then get your passport right now. It takes a while to process, no matter where you get it from. Trust me...I know.

For fundraising, we'll be shoveling snow for residents/businesses of Pullman. So be ready to hear more about that.

We are also getting sweatshirts.
E-mail me with your size by this coming Mon Feb 18th. acongdon@wsu.edu

Its that time of the year again where we will be sending letters to friends, family, and alumni requesting donations.  Send me names and addresses of anyone you think might be interested in donating.  Everyone should come up with at least a couple of people.

Upcoming Races

We have a couple of events coming up.  We have the northwest clinic in Seattle on the weekend of the 16th-18th of Feb.  This is great opportunity to get some great coaching by some veteren coaches and alumni of the district.  The other race is a team race our district is proposing to have for the weekend of the 23rd and 24th.  Last year this race was lots of fun over on San Juan island.  Please email me soon to let me know that you want to go to these or if you have any questions.

It's free and easy, and only 2 hours of your time. We really need you guys to take it.

The dates are:
Jan 14
Feb 11
March 17
April 14

All at 6-8pm at the Rec Center.

E-mail Carly at carly_morse@wsu.edu to sign up. And it's by first come first serve basis, so sign up now. Our next race is Feb 2nd, so they're coming up quick!

summary of tonight's meeting

Here's a little summary of the meeting for those of you who missed it tonight.

We have a lot of fun regattas to look forward to this spring. A schedule of the dates are on our team website at www.wsusailing.com. So keep your calendar open.
Also, the regatta in Victoria, Canada will require passports for travel. Get one right now if you'd like to go because they take quite a while to process.

We will start to have regular practices later, after the snow melts. But if you'd like to sail now, just call any of the officers and we can arrange something.

It's time to collect dues again! $40 for the semester to practice with us and compete in regattas. This must be turned in to Diana, our secretary, before your first race.

There are also lots of cool t-shirts left. Only $12! And you can also pay Diana for that at the same time as your dues! They are great to wear around school and to show off to your friends.

That's all, let me know if you have any questions.

fundraising at basketball games

Hi Team,

Now that it's wintertime we will be doing some fundraising. It's important that we all participate because the money goes towards new boats, maintaining the boats we have, and for team for next year and on.

One of our fundraisers will be to work at concession stands in Beasley Coliseum for basketball games, concerts, and other events. When we sign up 5 to 10 people we will earn $125 base pay or 10% of the sales. So it will be worth our time.

In order to do this, a couple of us need to go through the training course. It will only take 1, maybe 2 hours. Are any of you able to do this Tues Dec 4th? And at what time?

I will sign us up now to work the concession stands for events starting after winter break.

Please respond to this e-mail right away if you can do the 1-2 hour training course Dec 4th, Tuesday. And with the times your are available.

Also, anyone who has a food permit, I'd like you to e-mail me back saying that you have one.

Thanks,
Angela Congdon

Singlehands Update

Great job to everyone who went to Cougar Cup.  It was very successful and you all did very well given the difficult conditions.  And congratulations to team 1, Scott, Charissa, Nick, and Angela for placing 3rd overall only losing to the two UW teams.

Unfortunatly, UW has decided to charge $50 per charter for singlehands this weekend.  Since we had 9 people sign up, we would have to pay 450 dollars for charters.  We can not afford this as a club since we are saving for a new boat.  So that means that anyone who wants to go will have to pay that 50 dollars themselves.  Given this new information I need to know very soon if you would still like to go.

Thanks,

Scott Wilson

Cougar Cup Update

Hello Cougar Cup Sailors!

We have a great weekend of sailing planned.  Please remember to bring with you:
- Sleeping bag, tent if you have it, and any camping gear you like to have.  We have tent space for five people.  That means we need space for at least four more people.  If anyone else has a tent and can bring it, please let us know right away.
- Food for the weekend.  There is a small store in Vantage that should supply you fairly well if need be.  We will have a barbecue available for use as well. There is also a good restaurant that lots of people prefer.
- A wetsuit, if you think you will need one.  These can be rented from the ORC, along with sleeping bags and tents.
- Nevermind about the $5 camping fee; the club is paying for it!

There will be two vehicles leaving at 4:00 pm.  Please meet at the shop ready to go at 3:45 pm.  Please let us know immediately if you cannot make this time.

Currently these people are confirmed:
Scott
Charissa
Angela
Nick
Cameron
Baxter
Diana
Devin
Tony
Valerie
Phil

If anyone else can go, and is not on this list, we could really use one more person!  Currently we have 11 people, which means we need one more if we want a third team.  Everyone is welcome.

See you tomorrow!  Call if you have any questions.

getting sailing!

Hi Everyone,

We're excited to get sailing this year, and we hope you are too!   Thanks for coming to the first meeting of the year.  Here's an overview of what we went over so you can have it in writing.

First, phone numbers to call if you want to go sailing or you get lost on the way to the shop, or you won't make it to practice:

Angela: 206.909.3010

Cameron: 425.359.4945

Diana: 253.230.3267

Scott: 360.303.1759

Practices will be Wednesdays and Thursdays at 3:00, meeting at the shop.  We will leave no later than 3:20, so get there early.  Please CALL someone if you will not be able to make it to practice that week.  If you have not signed up for a practice time, please email us to do so.  Already signed up are:

Wednesday – Scott, Tony, Diana, Conner, Baxter, Jake, Brian, Tyler, Rob, and Catherine.

Thursday – Cameron, Elisa, Angela, Baxter, Brian, Tyler, Josh, Dibs, Diana, and Catherine.

Bring a change of clothes (expect to get wet), a snack, water, and sunglasses.  Bring something warm even though we will probably have good weather for a while.  You can sail barefoot or in tennis shoes, and bring gloves if you have them.  We will provide life jackets.

THE SHOP is behind Sloan Hall.  Walk down the hill next to Sloan, go under the archway, and turn left.  We will be on your right, down in a green parking lot next to a building with lots of windows.  You should see some sailboats.

Dues are $40 per semester and we need them at your first practice.  We take cash or checks made out to WSU Sailing.  Give your money to Diana (treasurer), or any officer can give it to her for you.

We need van drivers to go anywhere with this club.  To be a van driver you must:

-be 21

-have 3 or fewer traffic infractions in the past 3 years

-have insurance

-take the little one-hour class

If you are eligible, PLEASE sign up for the class on the attached flier.  Turn it in at the rec center.

COUGAR CUP is the weekend of 22 September!  Get excited; it is the first regatta of the year, WE host it (at Vantage), and we all have a GREAT time.  Mark it on your calendars now because you cannot miss it.

Tomorrow (Thursday) from 3-5 at the rec center we will have a fully rigged sailboat to recruit new sailors.  Come hang out for a little bit and have some fun meeting new people.

See you tomorrow!!

Fall Intersectionals

Hello team, hope everyone is having a good summer.

We need to decide before August 1st, which intersectionals we would like to attend this fall.  Here is a list of the popular intersectionals we should consider.  Please look it over and tell me which ones you would like to go to the most.

Stoney Burke - October 6-7 - Berkeley
North South - November 10-11 - UCSB
Rose Bowl - Jan 5-6 - Alamitos Bay YC

My picks are Rose Bowl, North South, then Stoney Burke.  The rose bowl regatta is always the last weekend before we go back to school for the spring, so we would not be busy with school.

We will probably only be able to afford one of these regattas, but we will know for sure after school starts.

Also, attached is the spring newsletter i sent out to many of your parents and our alumni.  Pass it on to anyone you think would be interested.

Sail a lot this summer.  Please email me your picks before August 1st.

Congratulations! Two members of our team were elected to the All Northwest Sailing Team. Charissa Benson well deserves being named All NW Crew of the Year.  She has been to the most regattas on our team, even spending a weekend to be an alternate at Sloops. Generally sailing in A division with her skipper Dave Wheeler, she has become very knowledgeable and proficient as a crew.  She is great at her job, always has a positive attitude, and has always pushed the team to get better and race more often.  In addition, she takes sailing further by teaching lessons at Sail Sandpoint in Seattle.

Scott Wilson, captain of our team, clearly deserves the NW Leadership Award. He has put so much time and hard work into the team organizing us to go to regattas, running Cougar Cup, our own regatta which we host in the fall, spending his free time at the shop to keep the boats in working condition, and so much more.

This is the first time anyone from WSU has made the All Northwest Team, so great job guys, our team is very proud.

PSU Gorge Invite

The weather looks good for the race this weekend.  We are planning on camping down at the river so be sure to bring a tent and sleeping bag.  Brian will be leaving from Seattle with Lauren P. and Angela.  He also has room for one more if anyone else needs a ride.  Rachel, Spencer, and Lisa will be coming from Pullman, and might have room for another.  I will be coming from Bellingham and bringing a laser, and Dave and Nick were planning on coming from Seattle bringing the rest of the boats.  However, Dave is looking for someone else to tow those boats this weekend, so if you are in the Seattle area, want to come this weekend, and have a trailor hitch, let us know today.  Charissa is also coming from Seattle.

We have room for more also so let me know if you want to come or if you have questions.

PSU Invite (all info)

The last race of the year is in 2 weeks, at Cascade Locks.  The dates are May 12 & 13.  We will be camping this time, in tents.  There will be a bbq on Saturday with NW district awards.  The racing format is 4 divisions 2 fj divisions and 2 laser divisions.  Let me know what you would rather do, sail an fj or laser.  Since most of us will not be in Pullman we will have to work out rides.  When you tell me if you can come or not, let me know where you will be, and if you need a ride or plan to drive yourself.  There will be people coming from Bellingham, Seattle, and probably Pullman also so we should be able to get everyone.  Below is the NOR for the regatta.  If you have any questions let me know.

Please tell me if you can go ASAP.

Thanks and sorry again about the multiple emails.

See you all at the potluck tonight at 7!!  Details are at www.wsusailing.com.

End of Year Potluck

Hey everyone,

To end the year we will be having a potluck dinner party on Friday April 27th of dead week at 7:00 pm.  The party will be at Dave's house, 550 SE Jackson St.  This will be a potluck dinner so everyone should bring something.  I will send out information about what to bring later.  At the party we will discuss the year, show pictures and videos and just have a good time.  We will be holding officer elections for next year and have a raffle to raise funds for a new boat.  So far we have had raffle donations from 3 companies, some nice rash guards from West Coast Sailing, some Gill sailing gloves, and some Staaf Sails Duffle bags.  These are some really nice items!!

Everyone is invited so bring your friends and family.

This potluck dinner will replace the meeting that was scheduled for tonight.

Also, for the race this weekend, we could use more people so me know if you want to go.

See you soon,

Recent Racing

Sailing Team,

I just wanted to congratulate those who raced the past two weekends.  At Women's Champs two weekends ago Diana, Charissa, Angela, and Lauren did very well.  This was the first time we have sent a team to Women's Champs, and they provided the other teams with some good competition.

At Rainier Cup this weekend, Dave, Charissa, Scott, and Angela were speed demons in the varsity fleet.  Wind was 15-20 knots most of the weekend, so we are all a little sore.  Rachel, Spencer, Bryan, and Lauren wrestled the JV fleet and gained some good heavy wind experience.

Results are posted on the web www.wsusailing.com

I also put a video of this weekend up on the NWICSA website so check that out when you get a chance.

This weekend is the Northwest Coed Champs, so tell me soon if you can make it.

Thanks for all your hard work,

Scott Wilson

Rainier Cup

The Rainier Cup is a month away, but we need to know who plans on going by the end of this coming week.  Rainier Cup is the northwests only intersectional regatta which will be held this year at the Cascade Locks.  Being an intersectional, it is always fun to race and socialize with the out of district schools.  We will be camping at the local KOA, with the other teams.

Let me know if you plan to go by Friday March 23rd.

You can read more about it here.

Hope you had a good break.

Summer Sailing Job

Just in case you are interested...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Scott,

In the past, your colleagues have been helpful in passing on our Summer Staff Openings to your team.   It's that time of year and I'm hoping you can forward this on to the rest of your sailors.    We have a number of collegiate racers and grads on our staff each summer.   We are still looking for some of your up and coming sailors to join us on Cape Cod this coming summer.

Cheers,

WSU Team Regatta

Sailing Team,

Friday Harbor was great this last weekend.  Not much sailing was accomplished as a result of strong wind and heavy seas.  The race committee felt it was too intense, so instead we went bowling and sightseeing.  It was a great time and a real bonding experience for the district.  We did get one race in on Sunday before the wind got too strong.  It was a good weekend overall.  I have posted pictures here www.collegesailing.org/nwicsa and here http://cub.wsu.edu/wsusailing/photos.html so check em out.

This Saturday, however, we are having our own race.  We will meet at the shop Saturday morning at 8 oclock leaving immediately, so be on time… Diana!!  We are going to try to race most of the morning and we are going to mix things up a little bit.  By that I mean we will be mixing up skippers and crews for each race.  We will be having short course races to get as many rotations in as we can.  Once around the windward mark and finish downwind.  We will explain this if you dont know.

Let me know that you are going so I can plan accordingly.  It should be a lot of fun. Any questions feel free to ask.

There will be a party Saturday night at my house.  9ish

Clinic Update

We have been given a charter boat from UW for this weekend. This means that everyone who signed up will sail. We might even be able to get another boat, so if anyone else still wants to go this weekend we might have room. We have 5 boats so the following people are guaranteed a boat: Scott, Dave, Nick, Charissa, Angela, Ryan, Rachel, Amanda, Devin, Brian.

As for traveling, we have not figured everything out yet, but it should be similar to this last weekend.  We will be leaving friday in two cars, coming back on Sunday.  Depending on what vehicles we are taking and whose driving, one vehicle might be able to stay an extra day and come back on Monday.  For those who are going, call me or email me when you can leave on Friday.  Remember that we want everyone to stay with the team on Friday and Saturday night.  If you do not, we will make fun of you behind your back.

The clinic will consist of morning lectures and afternoon sailing drills on the water.  This will happen both days most likely.  If you have any other questions let me know.

Happy V-day,

Scott Wilson

Jeff Mixdorf RESULTS

Jeff Mixdorf went very well this weekend.  No wind on Saturday, but plenty on Sunday.  Almost everyone went for a swim on Sunday.  Only 3 races were held in some very fluky conditions, though Dave and Charissa and Angela and myself were able to pull out a 7th out of 12.  The rest of the team did very well though given the conditions and being most of there first time.

Results are post here:

http://cub.wsu.edu/wsusailing/jeff07.txt

Everyone that went, please send me your pictures so I can put them on the website.  Ryan, be sure to send me the group picture!

Reluctantly I should also mention that Dave won our go kart racing on Friday.  Though it probably had something to do with weight and friction.

Great job to everyone who went.

Sailing Wed Feb 7

Sorry about the short notice, but for all those hearty souls, there will be sailing tomorrow, Feb. 7, meeting at the shop at 2pm, returning to campus after dark (6ish).  Temperatures are forecast at 50 degrees, with steady 10 knot winds.  We will also be rechristening one of our Alpha sailboats.  For anyone going to Jeff Mixdorf, this is a great chance to familiarize yourself with the boats we'll be sailing this weekend.  Call me or Scott if you're interested.

Sailing Clinic

The Northwest clinic is the weekend after Jeff Mixdorf, February 17-18.  It will be held at UW (Sanpoint) and is required of all team members.  You will learn more at this clinic than you will all year.  It is highly beneficial and there usually are some great coaches there.  Again reply to this email if you plan on going by this Thursday.

We will probably stay at Dave's house Friday night, and the Brown house on Saturday night.  Don't forget that this is a three day weekend.

Let me know if you have any questions.

growth of our district, this will be a Varsity regatta.  Each school will be

this event to only eligible collegiate sailors due to our rapidly growing
district and our limited fleet of alphas.

The regatta will be sailed in Alphas supplied by the Western Sailing
Team.
All attending teams will be provided with a minimum of one boat.
Please
RSVP by Monday, February 5th in order for us to make a rotation.  Also,
